I’m in nude heaven! I love 4 new palettes: MAC’s limited Edition Sharon Osbourne DUCHESS quad ($44), MAC’s also Limited Edition Pedro Lourenco NUDE QUAD ($44), Laura Mercier’s new, limited edition NUDE SMOKY EYE palette ($95), bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 8.0, limited edition THE POWER NEUTRALS ($40), and a make-it-yourself palette with 4 of the Sunday Riley Prismasilk Eye Colors ($26) IN OUTBACK, RICH EARTH, SIBERIAN SABLE, and FRENCH PRESS, and two old favorites from my makeup bag which are both, sadly, sold out: Bobbi Brown’s NAVY AND NUDE palette from 2013, and Chanel’s QUADRA EYE SHADOW in Variations which is an old favorite. I wish Chanel would reissue Variations (this is a different palette than Chanel’s current Variations quad).
Perfect for summer travel, a nude palette works for day and a great liner can smoke it up at night. Look for a light eye shadow for the entire lid as a base in off-white, cream, light pink, yellow or peach, and add two other slightly darker nude shades to your palette: one matte and one with some shimmer is my preference, and use them for layering, or each by themselves. You can create a wash of one of these slightly darker shades all over the lid, and use a pinker, peachier, or just the warmer of the two shades in the crease. Add a darker eye shadow for lining and with a good brush or two you’re equipped for a few different, but beautiful looks!
Nudes, either warm or cool, can be worn by any skin tone and look great with any eye color, but blue and green eyes POP with pinky nudes and bronzy nudes, and look even bluer or greener with lavenderish or greenish-nudes. I like peachy or grayish nudes and purpley-brown nudes on brown or green eyes — these latter two are tones which can bring out the golden hue in brown or hazel eyes, and the bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 8.0 THE POWER NEUTRALS has lovely greeney, purplish and gray tones.
My current most-in-rotation shades are the Sunday Riley Prismasilk, especially OUTBACK. It’s a hard to describe mix of brown and purple with enough warmth to look rosy when sheered out.
The wonderful thing about most nudes is that they are so forgiving — nudes are best-sellers for a reason. A slight wash of a nude shadow and you are ready for casual or work looks, and it is a fool-proof look, easy enough for anyone to master. A nude shadow base is the perfect foil for a very dark or very bright liner; once you are comfortable with a few good nude choices, then go crazy! Add a bright or dark liner, like these no-budge choices: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils ($20), the impressive Anastasia Beverly Hills Covet Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil ($19) or a shimmery or metallic pencil like Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in ABBEY ROAD ($24) in the outer or Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in GODDESS ($25) in the inner corners – if you don’t have GODDESS yet, you are missing a perfect highlighting pencil to use everywhere. You’ll always want it (or the slightly more pink/cool IRAKLION) in your makeup bag. Your lovely nude is a beautiful, safe background for any color experimentation!
