Laura Mercier makes such marvelous palettes that are perfect for…
Yves Saint Laurent created a splash in 1965 with his Mondrian print shift dresses and proved that the maestro had arrived. The lovely YSL 5 Color Couture Eye Palettes ($60) for June 2014 are a tribute to Mr. Saint Laurent’s genius and they do not disappoint.

Try and see them all together at a YSL counter (the palettes are available now at Nordstrom, Sephora and YSL online) and have the counter MUA try them on you – you’ll swoon with pleasure. This is known as a cheap thrill and its one of the best kinds. I chose: Fauves #2, and Afrique #3 (see swatches) Palette #3, Afrique, is so similar to a once-beloved Dior 4-color palette, now long gone, that I was hooked immediately.
The texture and the saturation of color is superb, although you’ll see in the swatches that the lighter tones are less saturated and for that reason need a cream base or use as more of a highlighting shade. I’d compare the quality and the texture and even the shades in the Yves Saint Laurent palettes to Tom Ford, Guerlain or Dior eye shadows, and they are priced in that range. The mirror-finish cases are heavy and have that satisfying designer-brand CLICK.
YSL’s handy application chart is one of the better ones I’ve seen – this seems to be a trend now with shadow products, and I’m all for it. I mistakenly photographed the French-language side. It does come in English, too!
As a bonus, YSL has included the cutest little brush (see pics)! Spongies are something I always keep but only use in emergencies, and the sponge included has useful shapes, but I’m a brush geek and I’m really excited by the tiny brush – it’s finding immediate use in my travel makeup bag as a lip brush (sorry YSL); similar to the little brush that Chanel used to include in their lip quads, and it is just what I need for my MAC Pro Lip Palettes when I throw one in my travel bag, as they don’t come with brushes, teeny-tiny or otherwise.
When I tore myself away from the YSL counter I checked, as I always do, at Chantecaille and added 2 perfect eye pencils that look great with the YSL palettes: Nutmeg and Sapphire. Chantecaille 24 hour waterproof eyeliner ($26) really is waterproof, so you’ll need to smudge them quickly if you are smoking’ it up. They dry like a liquid liner to a tenacious, waterproof finish. I found that an oil-based cleanser (like MAC, Nars or Philosophy cleansing oils) work best in removing waterproof cosmetics.[articlequote]From Yves Saint Laurent: Offering 5 eye shadows in a single case. COUTURE PALETTE is presented in a signature gold case stamped with the iconic Cassandre logo which opens to reveal bold black Couture lines, perfectly proportioned graphic design features and high-impact color associations – all nods to the legendary “Mondrian” dresses created by Mr. Saint Laurent. Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized fashion by imposing color as an element of affirmation and sophistication. We have developed a concept building on this heritage: Eyes like a work of art: Art of colors, Art of combinations, A design as a piece of art.[/articlequote] My YSL brush and I are going out now.
